On the Scene: Hippy Market Paris
Reportage by Sarah Jessica Johnson
Any store playing Johnny’s Cash's “Folsom Prison Blues” when I walk in is ten times more likely to see me make a purchase. Hippy Market in Paris’ 4th arrondisement is one such store. Nestled between many clothing shops near the metro Etienne Marcel at 3 rue Turbigo, Hippy Market, stands out for its bright colors, peace flags, and blaring American retro music. The store is French-owned and sells vintage clothes, three fourths of which come from America. The selection is large for both men and women and the shop is organized by color. If you are looking for an old derby hat, a knit Christmas sweater or very expensive Levi’s Jeans (made in America!) this place is for you. Hippy Market is irresistible and ever-changing—they receive over five hundred items every week. A perfect place for someone looking for that individual or unique piece, HM is just a quick metro ride (or flight) away!
While the French believe in neutrals, this store is primarily filled with color
You might take outfit cues from the startling realistic mannequins
Seriously! Is she a customer or made of plaster??
Long flowy skirts and brillant patterns may be a rare sight in Paris, but there are many in stock at Hippy Market
Space is at a premium in this shop, a clever display in the red section of the store
This hat was a favorite- Jimmy Stewart meets John Wayne
A long rainbow rack of shirts in the women's sections
If you're not squeamish about second-hand shoes (I'm not!) this place is a gold mine for vintage heels and boots
Buy your Paris fur (real or fake) here!
The bag is the only thing I'd be brave enough to wear from this outfit
Nothing is more American than Mickey. Disneyland Paris anyone??
Sharpies and converses, reminds me of middle school...
Paris fashion trend alert! Everyone and their mother (literally) can be found wearing elbow patches-- on sweaters, coats, t-shirts and hoodies. This could warrant it's own post, seriously I see them an average four times a day on the street.
One customer models here retro purchases, a 50's skirt, blouse and heels.
There are moments when Hippy Market feels like an army surplus store, which is a good thing.
I haven't thought about Lee products since the 1990's. Who else had a vest like this?
The shop's colorful entrance screams "come into our zen fashion den!" and when you're in Paris you should!
