On The Scene: Street Art in Little Five, Atlanta
Fellow editor Matthew Clair and I both happened to be in Atlanta visiting the schools we taught at while doing Teach for America the last two years. So, of course, on the first night we had to visit our old stomping grounds.
We and two other friends lived in Inman Park in Atlanta, and we spent a lot of our free time in the Inman Park, Old Fourth Ward, and Little Five areas. We all moved away earlier in the summer, and yet one of the first things I noticed upon coming back was all the new and changed murals. Atlanta has murals and graffitied art all over the city, and there's plenty of it in the Inman Park and Little Five area. The streets become mini art galleries on your drive to Target.
After dinner at the new Wrecking Bar Brewpub (which is pictured from the side below and I highly recommend it for the food, beer, and atmosphere), we decided to explore the area and have some fun taking pictures of the most recent murals.
First off is the now closed Little Five Dry Cleaners. Notice the big squares used to cover past graffiti. They rarely last before more street artists makes their marks.
Now... I said we had some fun, didn't I?
Oh, there's some of the fun.
Next, we needed to head down Euclid Ave and straight through Little Five.
Some personality at the corner of Euclid Ave and Moreland Ave.
In Little Five, the stores were newly-primed with fresh paint jobs (just in time for fall?) and bright window displays.
The graffiti was brought indoors at OMG Taco.
Meanwhile, alleyways became art exhibitions.
Advertisements are painted on walls, not pasted to billboards.
And over on Elizabeth Street in Inman Park, there's a mural that reminds me of looking up at the clouds and trying to pick out ones shaped like animals as a kid. What do you see?
